BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) Kaitlin McCulley --It's not exactly a Buddhist temple, but inmates in this maximum security Alabama prison are practicing the ancient meditation tradition.
Fernandrez Jordan has been an inmate for three years. "It's helped me to understand the repercussions of the actions I've done in the past."
It's all part of a meditation practice called Vipassana. The chants and music guide listeners into a state of awareness of the moment.
Director of Treatment, Ron Cavanaugh says they're seeing an improvement in inmates' behavior.

Thank goodness he is spending his time finding peace and beauty instead of wasting hours in prison growing and violent. It is a wonderful thing, don't you think, to be a citizen of the land of liberty, where no law may be made to force a particular religion on anyone? So proud to be an American when I read this comforting story of love and reconciliation in the harshest of worldly places. Amen! Rev. Tom S. Biloxi MS
