MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A Muslim cleric has delivered the opening prayer in the Alabama House. Kareem Abdullah, imam of the Birmingham Islamic Center, prayed for Alabama to prosper as the House began its session Thursday.
Ministers from across the state, mostly from Christian churches, pray at the start of each day's session, just before House members say the Pledge of Allegiance.
Abdullah was invited by state Representative Yusuf Salaam of Selma, the only Muslim in the Alabama Legislature. Salaam says he invited Abdullah because he feels it's important to show the lawmakers and people of Alabama that "most Muslims are God-fearing people," not anti-American terrorists.
